at Rochester Institute of Technology

Unilever, global consumer goods giant, approached our class of RIT senior designers to visualize how some of their best selling brands could appear on a premium level while being highly sustainable.

Our multi-disciplinary team of 6 students (2 graphic design/2 industrial design/2 packaging science) envisioned Tresemme leading the haircare industry in sustainability. Touring facilities such as American Packaging Corporation and Pactech, we studied the materials and processes of flexible pouch manufacturing, and used this information to fuel our designs.

Through high-level research and surveys, we found that consumers are comfortable with the concept of purchasing refillable flexible pouches for soaps (such as Method) and that introducing this refill system to the haircare industry would be not only welcomed but accepted and used by the consumer.

Out of 7 teams of 6 students each, our team was awarded 1st place. Unilever felt our designs were the most well-rounded and our sustainability mission was impressive.
